High winds and fire warnings 02/19/14

Hi pals - Puffy here.

We are on high alert due to extremely high winds (65 mph)  and lots of dry brush so fires are springing up around our State.  So far there have not been any casualties or loss of homes because the wonderful fire crews have managed to knock them down quickly, but with the arrival of the high winds that might change instantly.  Our snow fall for this season has been disappointing so we are also facing more drought conditions.  Many local lakes have been dry for several seasons and it doesn't look like they are going to be replenished any time soon.  The lake in our community once panned out into what is now cattle grazing pastures but each year the lake it gets smaller and smaller.  We could really use some moisture to help resolve these conditions.

This is the cattle pasture in our community - the whole basin used to be filled with water.

Here is tomorrows dinner - I wish....

Do you see the pretty candy striped cliffs?  Want to see some more?

Our property isn't right by these cliffs because you have to pay more for those plots of land.  Besides that's usually where the bobcats and mountain lions roam.    Instead, our property is right in the thick of trees and boarders a National forest so we need to be cautious when fire conditions arise.

See all the trees?  They're pretty but once the snows melt, as it is now, those trees become fire kindle and since we are in a valley with lots of trees everything can burn within minutes.

    1. Thank you Finley. Momma is loving this blogging thing because we can post all types of pictures not just pictures of Coco and me. I can't wait to see photos of your garden this year and of course pool ball with you and Whitley.

    1. There were several fires burning in New Mexico yesterday: one has been contained and the other is surrounded and hopefully contained today. The trees and brush are very dry but there is no rain forecasted for the near future. We are on alert to watch for smoke and call in any seen.

    1. Yup, those candy striped cliffs are really something. Momma had told daddy that she didn't want to live someplace where fires could and do occur, but daddy won out and here we are. There have been some really bad fires in Arizona, California and other Southwestern states in the last couple of years. Some have been started by crazy people who like to see things burn, others by lightning strikes that set the brush on fire. Either way now is a scary time of the year. We really, really need some rain....

  4. Your area is beautiful! Momma's sister lives in a valley in British Columbia and they have lots of trees around like you do. We know what it means to be on high fire alert. Sure hope you get some of that needed rain.

    1. Thank you Buddy. Living here among the trees you have to expect that someday a fire will roar through. Right now there is no rain in the near forecast...

  5. Crikey Coco Rose and Puffy ... you poor things .... those pictures are just beautiful. Very much like Australia except for the snow and the trees are different. I LOVE seeing all the pictures from over your way. Thankyou for posting them. We have candy striped cliffs in places too. Beautiful!! We are also in drought conditions at the moment. Please God ... let it rain soon here and at your place and anywhere else that REALLY needs it, aye????? Bushfires are VERY VERY scary. We have really bad ones here too but mainly in summer. Our eucalyptus trees burn like fury. Keep safe over there. You live in a very beautiful place. Take lots of care.
